LiveFit Trainer Recap Week 2 and Memorial Day Weekend

After as much pain I was in after week one of LiveFit, I decided to tone down all my weights last week, and thankfully, it was still a good workout, but without the massive DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) afterward.

I also set a goal for myself last week, and succeeded. At the start of the year, I decided to set one week goals for myself in order to actually make those goals. Last week, I determined to finish week 2 of LiveFit on Thursday, so that I could go camping with my mom's family around Nebraska City. I also did it so that I could spend a little more time with my grandpa, whom I didn't get to say goodbye to after our cruise in February. I always enjoy spending time with him.

On Saturday morning, I woke up around 7, and it was rainy and cold. It was nice, actually. Got to sit around visiting with my uncle, and cousins, before anyone else got up. I made my family bacon and pancakes on a camp stove, which is different than making it on an electric skillet. Still tasty, though.

Afterward, my sister and mini-Me, Laura, convinced me to go with them to the Flea Market. I didn't particularly want to go, being broke and having not found anything the last several years (I'm trying not to accumulate any more stuff in my life), but I went, bought kettle korn (they have it homemade and it's wonderful) with pop deposit money, and have been enjoying it ever since.

I don't tell anyone where we camp, because it's pretty quiet, and I don't like to share. :-)

My sister and I had plans to come back yesterday, because I had a friend from college coming. My friend, Alicia got to visit me during the dark days I encountered after graduation, and I still look at that visit as one of the few high points of that awful year. She came over to my house for dinner last night, where I made Pesto Lasagna Roll Ups, which everyone seemed to love, and we played Clue, and watched Robin Hood: Men In Tights. The only thing missing was the rest of our college group. Being around one person makes me miss them all. Love you girls!

Today, while my sister had lunch with friends, and my dad and grandpa made the cemetary rounds to visit late family members, including my grandmother out at Hazel Dell, my mom and I started our garden. Tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, lettuce, beets, chammomile, dill, mint, sage, and basil. Hopefully it turns out well his year, like last.

LiveFit Trainer Week 1 Recap

Okay, so maybe these recaps will continue this time around. Somehow, I always get to the middle of phase two and get burned out. It shouldn't seem too hard: See and excercise, do it to the best of your ability, and move on to the next one. I guess this journey into health and fitness is a lot more mental than I want to believe.

But I made it through week one again, which I feel good about, despite having to take my weights down from ten pounds. Turns out in the two months since I last lifted weights, my muscles atrophied a bit (they do that. Who knew?), and they can't handle ten pounds right now. I switched down to 7.5's for my back, biceps, and shoulder workouts, but because the first day, I tried to use ten pounds for my chest and triceps, I was in a LOT of pain all week. Live and learn, I suppose.

Anyway, mini recaps.

I did it as directed, with the exception of narrow push ups. Those are too hard for me. I can usually get out about five, which only goes down from there. Trying to get back in the game is harder than it should be, but what matters is doing it.

Back and Biceps are typically my favorite thing to work out. Probably because they feel strong, and they make me feel energized when I finish. The weight was still too heavy, but I felt good when I finished.

Legs are usually pretty easy to work out, too, because I'm pear shaped, and have pretty strong legs. The hardest is the Barbell Squat, mostly because the bar is hard on my neck. I need to keep a towel in my gym bag to use as a pad between the bar and my neck.

After legs, I'm not sure why, but I took a three day hiatus between workouts, which I shouldn't have done, but I went to the gym yesterday after church, and made it through my workout with lower weights, and feeling good.
I even did the abs (except the exercise ball crunches had to be done on the floor. My gym doesn't have a ball), and am feeling them today!

This week, I need to do my workouts Monday-Thursday, as on Friday, as soon as I come home from work, we're going out for Memorial Day Weekend. I'm pretty psyched about it, as I get to see some awesome people, including my grandpa, who I haven't seen since our vacation back in February.

That's week one. I lost weight this week, which makes me feel good and motivated. Hopefully clean eating will continue to commence as I continue this journey.

Fun Facts Friday!

So, how's everyone's week going? Excited that it's Friday? I know I am! Thought I'd get started on Fun Facts Friday, hopefully something that will be here to stick.

1. I restarted LiveFit this week. I had serious qualms about even talking about it, since I can never seem to finish it. I've been praying about my health and that God would give me strength to complete the program. We'll see. Right now, I'm really, realy sore. 

2. Spent the week eating clean. LOTS of fruits and veggies. I'm waiting for the energy to kick in, but I am feeling a bit better. Trying to figure out things to make ahead to take to work, and have made herbed egg muffins and fajita veggies for a big salad. Pretty tasty, but even better when topped with salsa and sour cream. 

3. Janie is back to being her old self again. For awhile, she's been stressed, pulling out her fur, avoiding me, and hiding under my cedar chest in the living room. I've had her on kitty prozac for the last month and a half, and she's been back to normal, including sleeping on my bed!

4. Have you heard that CBS won't be going forward with their HIMYM spinoff, How I Met Your Dad? Color me bummed. Not sure what's going to fill the hole in my heart where HIMYM was. A lot of good entertainment and lessons in those nine seasons. I even loved the last season with the Mother, Tracey. She was adorable.

5. I'm considering adding recipes to my latest novel. It's about a baker, and she opens a cupcake truck, why not include some recipes? This means I'll need to do some cupcake experimenting, which I'd wanted to do this year, anyway. Maybe I'll sign up for treats and church and test the recipes out on unsuspecting congregants. Mwah ha ha.

6. Working on Riffs From the Dork Side has taken up a lot more time than I thought it would. I can't wait until Lauren and I get into a groove with it. I just posted our latest conversation on Emma starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeremy Northam.

That's pretty much all I've got this week. Now back to the novel writing board. Have a great weekend!

Happy Mommy's Day!

Today is the day to celebrate all mothers. I'm a very fortunate person because my mom is my best friend. We can geek out over Muppets and Disney and she will NEVER tell me to stop loving these things, because she loves them, too.

Seriously, meeting Mickey on our last cruise was one of the best things (She keeps talking about it, and imagining that he blew her a kiss, when really it was me! ;-) ).

When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a nurse, just like my mommy (which changed quickly when I tried to watch a show on PBS on leg surgery!), and she was the first person I called with all my good news in college (Like getting an A on my Senior Project).

On this, her 30th Mother's Day (My sister's 30th birthday was just Friday, as a matter of fact!), I want to wish my Mom the happiest of days, because she's the best mother ever. Seriously.

And also to the two great women who raised my parents, who are missed more and more each year.

Homemade Laundry Detergent...Not a Trend, a Way of Life

I've been really getting into more natural methods of cleaning, and living. I'm a huge fan of using baking soda and vinegar for everyday cleaning, and after a year of making my own laundry detergent, I can honestly say that buying detergent from the store is something I'll never go back to.

I started last year with this recipe, and followed it to a T. We used it and really liked it. We were really close to running out again, so on this, my usual day off, I made another batch. Not as big as the last time, when I used THIS recipe, which involves dumping whole boxes into a tote or bucket, but for now, this worked well.

Now, MY version of this recipe.

  • 2 Bars Ivory Soap
  • 2 Cups Borax
  • 2 Cups Washing Soda
  • 2/3 Cup Downey Unstoppables (I like the Blue scent)
  • 1 Cup Baking Soda

Shred the soap. I use the food processor with the shredder attachment, but then also the S blade to chop them into smaller bits.

Add all ingredients to a large bowl and stir well.

Place the mixture into a screwtop jar (I use an old gallon pickle jar, but feel free to use something pretty).

Use 2 T of detergent per load. In my initial load, I used OxyClean instead of baking soda, and have continued to use one level scoop per load.

That's it. Super easy, am I right?

Gym Politics vs. the Real World

I don't make it a secret that I go to Planet Fitness. It's inexpensive, there are tons of machines, the help are very nice, and the only two problems I ever encountered was in the first week, the employees didn't know how to operate the Red Light machines (and looked at me like idiot teenagers), and the second was when some teenager (notice *teenager* is prevalent for both of these stories) was dropping heavy dumbbells near my head. Neither has happened in a long time. I feel very comfortable at my gym, and get a little pissy when people pooh pooh it for vain reasons.

Case in point, back in March, a woman was kicked out for not adhering to the dress code, which states:

Q: What is the Planet Fitness dress code?

A: We have a corporate dress code policy, for all Planet Fitness locations nationwide.
Dress Code:
No jeans
No String Tanktops
No boots/sandals
The above are all subject to our discretion. Exceptions are made for medical and religious reasons. We believe that this corporate dress code policy helps us to consistently promote a non-intimidating atmosphere at Planet Fitness where members can feel comfortable working out no matter which Planet Fitness location they are using. Our club managers are responsible for enforcing the dress code policy at all of our Planet Fitness locations. They are also responsible for determining which type of workout attire is inappropriate to be worn inside the facility. The managers will use their discretion when it comes to any workout attire that they believe is either inappropriate, offensive, or will cause safety concerns.

As you can read, subject to the discretion of the PF management. 

This story, as well as another last week, kind of grate on my nerves, mostly because of how whiny the supposed *victims* are. For example, the first one says that she intimidated the other members with her toned body. The second one, she was asked to cover up due to her shirt riding up over her baby bump. 

The last few days that I've been at the gym, I started glancing around at what people are wearing. It's getting warmer, so I thought that perhaps people would start changing up their workout attire to something similar to what the two ladies above had. Not so much. There's the occasional guy (actually, same guy) that cuts the arms out of his t-shirts, and slits down the sides (not attractive, but as it wasn't affecting me, I keep mum on it). 

The reason I bring this up is because it's shoddy blogger journalism, not to mention a bias against Planet Fitness to mention these, but not this other story.

There was another story that I read earlier this week, as well, that I agree with the customer on. A woman was working out with her 13-year-old son, and the next day she found out her membership was revoked. Yes, she a personal trainer, but she wasn't charging her son, she was teaching him to use proper form. 

It annoys me that several bloggers I read talk about the first two because they're Planet Fitness. The third story took place at LA Fitness, a place where super fit people work out, and they encourage people who are professional lifters. Because Planet Fitness prefers to cater toward people who aren't more inclined toward fitness, and specific branches took issue with people who they felt were violating their dress code. Breaking the rules. Working out with someone like in the third story shouldn't be considered a violation of any code, since she wasn't exchanging money for services. 

I hate that people make mountains out of molehills. They get offended at everything. The world isn't perfect. The world will chew you up and spit you out. While it's best to find some like minded individuals to share your life, no one owes you anything, and businesses will always think of their bottom line first. Just the way of the world.
